Pacing: Lots of action and dialog. This is a very fast paced book.
Characterization: The story is told in first person by Harry. While the reader only becomes familiar with Harry, many interesting characters appear in this story, including a crime boss, a faerie, a vampire, and my favorite – Bob, the skull.
Frame: The story is set in the Chicagoland area and much of the action takes place at night. Harry is investigating someone who uses black magic; the frame is quite dark.
Story line: Harry’s personality and associates make this a fun and entertaining read in spite of the grisly killings.

Personal notes: With its super fast pace, this was a great book to travel with. I read it in a day – started it in the Tucson airport and finished right before touching down in NY. It kept me engrossed the whole day – including two extra hours in O’Hare. I definitely plan to read more of The Dresden Files. It was interesting being reminded what airports were like prior to 9/11 – there is an airport scene where Harry is able to park his car outside and quickly run in to use a phone.

I have a day off!!! I’d like to celebrate this day off by reading like, 5 books. Actually, I get almost 2 full days off work, plus another one right after, so 5 is a very realistic goal at this point.

In preparation for YABC on the 25th, I will be re-reading The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. Both were 5-star reads for me, but I definitely need a refresher if we’re going to discuss them. See also: Battle Royale by Koushon Takami. I haven’t read it, but my husband got halfway before he was so thoroughly depressed when the story kept killing off the “main” character and replacing him or her with a new one. He still plans to finish it, and I plan to read it someday but it’s not that high up on my TBR list (which is now a disturbing 1176 books long).

I’ve met Freeman, he’s hilarious and friendly and I know I’m going to love this book too, especially after the retail misery that I just lived through this past week. I’m hoping he’ll also inspire my tell-all bookstore memoir (^_^) just kidding, Borders! I do try to release all of my customer-related frustrations out into the wild so they don’t affect my normally awesome customer service. But sometimes there are those ones you just can’t forget…
My fifth book will be A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. Oh, don’t look at me like that. I’m already halfway through, I just got interrupted by the work shenanigans. And 2 of the 5 books I picked to read are re-reads, so it won’t take me too long to go through them again.
In addition, I’ll be doing some regular posts over the next couple of days. I really fell behind because of the job. I’ve definitely got lots of material for an IMM post, a few bookshelf photos, a Quickie review or two or three, and dare I say, a contest? (*gasp*!)

Appeal factors:
Pacing: The third book in the series continues to be very fast paced – like the first two. Sookie barely has time to catch her breath before encountering some new problem.
Characterization: The series continues to be told by Sookie. Bill does not have as large a role in this story, since he is missing for most of it. Sookie seriously examines her relationship with Bill and a new character, a werewolf named Alcide Herveaux, is introduced.
Frame: The title of the book comes from the werewolf nickname of a vampire bar in Jackson. “It’s for Supes [supernatural beings] and their dates only. No tourists” (p. 62). The title frames the book quite well since most of the characters in this story are Supes.
Story line: While Sookie may have spent most of her life feeling alienated and alone, she is definitely becoming more comfortable with her skills and more at ease with herself.
